Where You Use Your Card Might Affect Your Credit

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I just found this in today’s NY Times. This should certainly make the paranoid in us a little happier, saying “see, I told you they were watching….”

In recent months, American Expresshas gone far beyond simply checking your credit score and making sure you pay on time. The company has been looking at home prices in your area, the type of mortgagelender you’re using and whether small-business card customers work in an industry under siege. It has also been looking at how you spend your money, searching for patterns or similarities to other customers who have trouble paying their bills.

In some instances, if it didn’t like what it was seeing, the company has cut customer credit lines.

There’s a lot more to the story, so please read more at NYTimes.com.

What does this mean for those of us interested in creating the best picture possible on our credit reports? Maybe you should keep a “clean” card for your purchases at the grocery store and Macy’s, and a “dirty” card for your splurges at the pawn shops and dollar stores. Some companies like Amex may shy away from the latter form of purchase, but other companies may not pay attention or care.

Is YouTube The Next Google? NYTimes Says “Maybe”

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

In the New York Times today:

YouTube, conceived as a video hosting and sharing site, has become a bona fide search tool. Searches on it in the United States recently edged out those on Yahoo, which had long been the No. 2 search engine, behind Google.

There’s a lot more to the story, so read about YouTube’s ascendancy here…

Horses Make Healthier People

Monday, January 19th, 2009

After a nice evening at the National Western Stock Show and the Pro Rodeo (I love those barrel racers), I found this article from Discovery particularly interesting:

A study in the latest issue of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies found that riding on horseback not only eases back pain, but it also improves the rider’s confidence and emotional well being while reducing stress.

The findings add to the growing body of research that horseback riding and related equine assistance therapy programs for disabled and injured individuals benefit human participants. … [read more]

Whoops! Online campaign gets a little too viral

Thursday, January 15th, 2009
From Wired.com:

It seems as though a Carl’s Jr. online promotion for a free $2.75 “Famous Star” hamburger coupon went a little too viral.

The Carpenteria-based chain promptly stopped honoring the coupons for their franchise burger after what seemed like a harmless online promotion was supersized by the net.

I love how they try to pretend the mistake wasn’t theirs by saying “seized.” Read the whole thing here:

Hey DJs, the Lowest Note in the Universe is B-flat, 57 Octaves below Middle C

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The deepest know note in the universe is B-flat, 57 octaves below middle C; so say astronomers observing pressure waves moving through gaseous clouds surrounding a black hole 250 million light years away. The waves show up as concentric rings of x-rays emitted by the colliding particles. A new pressure wave is emitted every 10 million years.

The 53 hours of Chandra observations revealed a note that is more than a million billiontimes deeper than what you can hear.

Chickipedia

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Nothing like Wikipedia, quite the opposite of Dickipedia, but probably catering to a similar audience, it’s Chickipedia! With features like “Random Chick” and attributes like “Dudes she has worked with” or “Assets,” you probably get the idea. You’re guaranteed to find people you’ve never heard of or may not expect to find here … not that I spent much time looking or anything.

Very educational video … very educational. I especially like the demonstration of the technique that can cause smoker’s lips.
